The Dave Petersen Veterans Tournament, hosted by Ravens Table Tennis Club this past weekend, wasn't just a showcase of athletic talent — it was a full-bodied community experience filled with fierce competition, deep respect, and delicious surprises.

Held at the Ravensmead Multipurpose Centre, the event brought together veterans of the game for two days of well-organized, tight-knit table tennis action. Hats off to Bevan Steyn and the entire Ravens team for running a smooth and professional tournament from start to finish. From the draw to the final point, the execution was crisp — much like some of the flat hits witnessed during the knockout stages.

But let's be real: the free coffee, donuts, cupcakes, and soup made everyone feel like champions, regardless of where they finished in the bracket. Special shoutout to the cupcakes, which were — and we don't say this lightly — next level. Some players may have come for the glory but stayed for the buttermilk frosting. And the soup? Warm, hearty, and healing — especially after an early group-stage exit.

🏓 On the Tables: A Champion Crowned

In the highlight match of the weekend, Shaun Jones delivered a commanding performance, defeating Denver Sweatz in a gripping final. Shaun also got the better of Nexus TTC's own Zahier Isaacs in the semi-final — a hard-fought battle that ended Zahier's deep run in the men's singles draw.

The competition was tough, with categories spanning from 40+ to 60+ men's singles, along with doubles and mixed events. Still, spirits were high throughout — especially from the ever-enthusiastic Nexus spectators, who showed up in strong numbers (despite most of us crashing out of the competition well before lunch).

🕊️ A Tribute to a Legend: Dave Petersen

The tournament also featured a moving tribute to Dave Petersen, the man whose name graced the event. Speeches were shared, memories flowed, and players paused to reflect on his contribution to the game and the lives he touched. The tribute was sincere, emotional, and perfectly timed — a reminder that table tennis is more than just a sport; it's a community.

😄 Friendly Fire and Flipped Loyalties

In a humorous twist, many from Nexus who had cheered against Denver Sweatz in the previous Duinefontein tournament found themselves cheering for him this time — because, well, table tennis loyalty is nothing if not strategic.

Unfortunately for Lindsay October, that shift in energy wasn't quite as charming — he ended up as the unfortunate casualty of Denver's newfound fanbase, bowing out in a spirited contest. But as they say in table tennis: if you can't beat them, cheer for them until the next round.

🎉 Thank You, Ravens TTC

From the warm hospitality to the well-oiled logistics, this year's Ravens Veterans Tournament reminded us why we love this game and the people around it. The organisers didn't just host an event — they curated an experience. Thank you, Ravens, for a weekend filled with precision, laughter, and perfectly baked goods.

Until next year — keep your blocks tight, your cupcakes moist, and your backhands cheeky.
